Duties and Accomplishments

  • Reorganized and rebranded the entire Emerson Esports organization, including rewriting and updating the constitution and prioritizing club accessibility and growth

The Emerson Esports organization was hit by the COVID-19 pandemic, and because of this was in a stagnant position for the majority of 2020 and early 2021. Many people were struggling with the pandemic, and as such, Emerson Esports was not able to grow as much as it could have in that time. New management took over the executive board (including myself), and we made it one of our main goals to put Emerson Esports on the right track toward growing and retaining members across campus.

As the new executive board, we revamped the entire Emerson Esports constitution, which had not been drastically altered since 2018. We also began to make the organization more accessible to members by changing Emerson Esports’ brand to be less specialized and more about being the gaming hub for our entire college.

  • Overhauled the executive board through group specialization and delegation and created the general board, providing a clear pathway towards joining the executive team and prioritizing student interests

While we were rebranding Emerson Esports, we noticed that interest had begun to grow rapidly the more we engaged with our community. Along with this, our exponential growth meant that our current executive board simply could not handle the work required to execute all of our ideas to help the organization grow. Our old executive board system was simplistic but effective. We had the President, Vice President, and Treasurer, along with a head position for each other aspect of the organization that had a lot of work involved, such as a Head of Competitive Organization, Head of Social Media and Marketing, and a Head of Content Development as well.

Our goal was to expand this system through the development of the “General Board” or genboard for short. This general board allowed for each head of a specific branch of Emerson Esports to form and hire a team so they could delegate assignments in order to divide the work between more people. This came along with an overhaul of the branches in general, which allowed for heads of new branches. We currently have heads for the following aspects of Emerson Esports: Competitive Organization, Social Media, PR & Sponsorship Outreach, Discord Management, Event Planning, and Content Development. Each of these heads has a team formed around them between 3-6 people who are all dedicated to helping the organization grow and prosper.

Executive and General Board Flowchart

An example of the new executive and general board that we created in order to facilitate distribution of work throughout the organization

  • Managed budget requests for merchandise, gaming peripherals, and purchases through Emerson College directly

Through running the organization, I worked alongside our Treasurer in order to submit purchase requests for many different items that our organization used throughout the semester, alongside discussions with Emerson College administration directly to discuss what purchases would better the organization.

  • Successfully organized over 25 online and in-person events, ranging from industry panels, casual game nights, seasonal events, and watch parties for various tournaments with turnouts ranging from 15-100 people

  • Tripled the amount of esports industry connections available to organization members through outreach and collaboration, many of which being from large esports & gaming organizations such as Team Liquid, Riot Games, and PlayStation Studios

| Head of Competitive Organization |

Duties and Accomplishments

  • Grew esports competitive teams from 2 games titles to 8

Before I became the Head of Competitive, Emerson Esports only had competitive teams for two games: League of Legends and Overwatch. After I took over the position, Emerson Esports expanded to include multiple competitive teams for 7 different game titles, labeled below:

    - Overwatch, League of Legends, Valorant, Rocket League, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Splatoon 3, and Apex Legends

  • Created and distributed competitive team interest forms to organization members, along with running and organizing tryouts for 5 different game titles

In order to gauge interest in our competitive teams, I created interest forms sent out to the organization that collected data and information about anyone interested in joining one of our teams. This information was used to organize tryouts and allow for the entire process to proceed quickly and efficiently.

  • Founded and managed 18 different competitive teams over the course of one and a half years

Over the one and a half years that I was the Head of Competitive, we had a total of 18 different teams for our 7 game titles. Due to my direction, I was able to give over 80 students the opportunity to play their respective games at a collegiate level and garner experience. This was quadruple the number of players that played under the Emerson Esports brand. A few of these teams are pictured below:

  • Appointed over 15 captains and coordinators to their respective teams within game titles

Due to the influx of teams, I appointed various members of the team to be captains and coordinators, giving them a basic understanding of how to manage their teams alongside their role of leading the team through various matches and tournaments.

  • Researched, organized, and signed teams up for various collegiate esports tournaments

Emerson Esports teams have competed in a variety of tournaments in games such as Overwatch, Rocket League, and Valorant including but not limited to: Activision Blizzard Collegiate Overwatch, the Boston Uprising Collegiate Cup, NACE Starleague, CSL, NECC, College Carball Association, and the Boston University Collegiate Cup.

Alongside this, I assisted in running a charity League of Legends tournament hosted by Emerson Esports and sponsored by Bay State College and Chipotle. This charity raised almost $500 for Gamer’s Outreach and was extremely successful.

Duties and Accomplishments

An excerpt of our Discord Role and Permission spreadsheet

  • Overhauling the organization’s Discord server, which includes:

    • Creating, deleting, and reorganizing over 65 channels, along with the development of over 100 roles and their respective permissions for each channel, on their own spreadsheet

These channels include practice channels and team-specific voice and text channels, channels for each branch and team of the executive board, casual gaming channels, and information channels.

    • Cultivating a community through online events and creating constant engagement, growing the server from ~250 members to 500 in only 1 year.

Through overhauling and rebranding the Emerson Esports Discord, we were able to directly keep members of our organization engaged with the community and grow exponentially. Our goal of being more accessible and more open for anyone to join our organization allowed us to become one of the largest and most active organizations on our college’s campus. (For more info on our previous Discord events, check the Esports Events tab)

      • To put these numbers into perspective, Emerson Esports as an organization was founded in the fall semester of 2014. Over the course of 6-7 years (until 2020-2021), the Emerson Esports Discord had amassed about 250 members. In 2021-2022 alone, when I took over Discord operations, we gained double that number in one year alone, which was more than the past 6 years combined.

    • Utilizing Discord bot management along with server analytics to further cultivate growth within the server

I was able to use Discord bots to help automate server operations, along with looking at deeper server analytics in order to determine patterns that would help me run the server as efficiently as I could.
